Taipei has been the de facto and "provisional" capital of the Republic of China, since 1949. The Japanese acquired Taiwan island in 1895 after the Sino-Japanese War and made Taipei the island's capital. The Republic of China took over the island in 1945 after Japan's defeat in World War II. Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek declared Taipei the provisional capital of the Republic of China in December 1949 after Kuomintang (KMT) was defeated by Communists during the Chinese Civil War. The KMT retreated to Taiwan and the jurisdiction of the Republic of China was limited to Taiwan while the Communist Party founded People's Republic of China on mainland China.

Today we arrived in Taibei about 16:00. After finishing everything, our first destination would be the National CKS Memorial Hall. We arrived there about 17:00. The first building I saw on the square was the National Theater. And oh my f*ck*ng God! It was f*ck*ng huge man!!! I had never thought those buildings (National CKS Memorial Hall, The Entrance, National Theater and National Concert Hall) were that huge. Those buildings were grand and very impressive!!! After seeing the flag of the ROC in the middle of the square, it was hard to hold my tears :~) It felt like I was home (Zivan told me to write this). I could feel all the spirit of our great nation and people. *tears again* :~)

Because it was sunset, so we decided to come back tomorrow for better pictures. :P

We made an appointment with the cousin of my cousin. She is Taiwanese and had lived in The Netherlands for a couple of years during her study. I ate a lot, because I had only eaten 4 xiaolongbao in the morning. After the meal we went to Shilin 士林 . The Shilin Night Market is a night market in the Shilin District of Taipei City, Taiwan, often considered to be the largest and most famous night market in the city. Goal of the trip: food~~~ whahahahahahahaha Yeah I know….. We have no other goal during this trip to Taiwan :P. But the whole fucking problem was the last meal. I had a dinner with 4 lovely ladies. And Chinese ladies don’t eat that much, that’s why they are so skinny. We ordered for 5 person and I have eaten like 75% of the food. 4/100*75= 3 persons. Damn~~~~~ That was heavy man~~~~~ I carried my belly through Shilin :S But still wanna taste their food :P I had Zhuangyuangao狀元糕 , ô-á-chian蚵仔煎 and Crab soup 蟹羹.

The plan was go clubbing after this, but man…… I felt sick of all those food, so I didn’t go :( Hoining and Zivan came back about 0200 and told me about girls with big boobs and asses taking their bikini off :( Damn…. I regret of eating all those food, and I regret that I didn’t go~~~~~ Damn…… Still regretting :(

Trip to ROC III (Tainan)

2009/01/13

Tainan is the oldest city in Taiwan and was the capital during imperial times. It is famous for its temples, historic buildings and snack food. The city is currently the fourth largest city on the island with a population over 760,000.

Little is known about Tainan prior to the Dutch rule except that it was a settlement of Han Chinese immigrants in the 14th and 15th centuries and was named Dayuan (大員). The Dutch established a trading post in 1624 at present-day Anping (former Ford Zeelandia), and used it as a base of operation for a variety of business they conducted in the region. However, in 1661 the outpost was under siege by a fleet of Ming Dynasty remnants led by Zheng Chenggong, who established his own kingdom on Taiwan and renamed the city Dongdu (東都; literally "East Capital") after the Dutch capitulated and withdrew from the island. In 1684, the Qing Dynasty conquered Taiwan and established Taiwan-fu (臺灣府Taiwan Government) as the first official local government in Taiwan.

Taiwan-fu was later renamed to Tainan-fu in 1885 when Taiwan was established as a province. Because it was formerly the capital of Taiwan, Tainan is also called Fu-cheng (府城; literally "Government City").

Tainan is also one of Taiwan's cultural capitals, as it houses the first Confucian School/Temple, built in 1665 on the island[5], the remains of the Northern and Southern gates of the old city, and countless other historical monuments.

The first historical monument we visited were the Chikan Towers 赤崁樓 originally called Fort Provintia, was built in 1653 by the Dutch. It was the first place where Zheng Chenggong beat the Dutch in 1661. There was a great statue that show us how the Dutch were beaten by us, the Chinese :D

After we had breathed some historical air, we looked for FOOD!!!!! Whahahahaha :P Our lunch:
* 蚵爹 (o-a-die, something with oyster and vegetable)
* 燒肉飯 (Roasted pork rice)
* 旗魚肚飯 (Minced fish rice)
* 珍珠奶茶 (Bubble milk tea)

After our we meal we went to Confucius Temple 孔廟 and East Port 大南門, a part of the former city wall. There was nothing special, but just two places where you must have been and have taken some pictures.

Next stop: Fort Anping 安平古堡, former Fort Zeelandia. It was a fortress built over ten years from 1624–1634 by the Dutch Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie in Tainan .

On 30 April 1661, General Zheng Chenggong of Ming China (1368-1644) laid siege to the fortress (defended by 2,000 Dutch soldiers) with 400 warships and 25,000 men. After a nine-month siege with the loss of 1,600 Dutch lives, the Dutch surrendered the Fortress on 1 February 1662, when it became clear that no reinforcements were forthcoming from Batavia (present day Jakarta, Java, Indonesia) and when the defenders ran short of fresh water.

Under the Koxinga-Dutch Treaty signed on 1 February 1662 between Koxinga and Frederick Coyett, the Dutch governor, the Dutch surrendered the Fortress and left all the goods and property of the VOC behind at Fort Zeelandia. In return, all officials, soldiers and civilians were free to leave with their personal belongings and supplies.

On 9 February 1662, Frederick Coyett handed over the keys to the fort and lead the remaining Dutch forces and civilians back to Batavia by sea, ending 38 years of Dutch colonial rule on Taiwan.

The Eternal Golden Castle億載金城was the last place in Tainan. The Eternal Golden Castle alternatively but less well known as Uhrkuenshen Battery 二鯤鯓砲台is a defensive castle in Anping, Tainan, Taiwan. The castle was built in 1874 by the famous Qing official Shen Baozhen in order to safeguard the coast and to defend the island against Japanese invasions.

In 1895, when Taiwan was invaded by Japan, the Taiwanese people fought against the Japanese battleship from this fortress. During the Russo-Japanese War, the Japanese government sold some of the fort's cannons in order to help pay for the war. With its cannons gone or obsolete, the fortress lost its military value.

After one day of history, we went back to Taizhong. Night + Asia = KARAOKE TIME!!!

Trip to ROC II (Taizhong II)

We planned to leave at 10:30, but it became 12:30 :P. Due of our delay, we had a wonderful brunch at Zivan's home! Her home help made us a f*cki*ng delicious meal! She is great!!! The soup ad fish was awesome man!!!

The first place for today was Taiwan Folklore Museum 民俗公園. When we arrived there….. I was closed (again!)! So we’ve only made some pictures and left it. We didn’t even need to pay for the parking.

The second place was a park called *damn….. I forgot the name :P*. We made some pictures, had a drink and left it :P.

After that park we had to go up the mountain to get to the Taichung Lavender Forest. That was a hard trip. Those roads makes me think about “Initial D”. The park was full of Lavender with a very good view. We sat there at an open air café, having a cup of Lavender tea with some sun light…… That’s what we call a Swiss life :P

After enjoying these, when left the Forest for another joy of life: FOOD!!! :P Yeah….. it’s him again :D Our biggest friend in Taiwan province :P This time we will have Mala hot pot 麻辣火鍋. But like you know, or not, I love to eat spicy and hot things, but then I will sweat non-stop. So I prefer not to eat it, since we have a couple of hours to go that day :P It’s not nice to have sticky clothes :D. So a normal one for me and the hot and spicy one for Zivan and Hoining. We’ve learned one lesson from yesterday: Don’t eat too much….. Hot pot + eat and drink all you can….. Yeah…..I think you know the result :(

Trip to ROC I (Taizhong I)

2009/01/11

The night before I was with Chris at LKF for a drink. I was at home about 02:00. At 05:30 I had to go to the airport, so I hadn't sleep that night.

After arriving at the airport of Taibei I had to wait for Hoining (my cousin) first. I arrived at 10:00 and she'll arrive at 10:30. Her friend, which she met in Australia during her study in 2007, will pick us up at the airport and bring us to Taizhong (Taichung) first. Her name was Zivan and will be our tour leader the coming days in all three cities.

Taizhong 臺中 is the third largest city in Taiwan, located in the west-central part of the island. It has a pleasant climate, and a population of just over one million people. The city is home to many manufacturers and in recent years has experienced rapid growth in the diversity of its cultural offerings.

The first thing we did after stepping out the car: Bubble tea !!! :)~~~ One of Taiwan's most famous products.

After we'd dropped our luggage at Zivan's home, we went out for some food. First victim: Beef noodles and Dumplings. Yummiyummi..... BUT, it was spicy. Spicy+Jay = LITRES OF SWEAT! Damn~~~~ I used more than 20 tisseus man, and I kept on sweating. Holy shit~~~~~

The first monument we would visit was the Shrine to the martyrs of the Republic of China. We came, we saw and it was closed :S Oh~~~~~~ Zivan hasn't done her homework!

After some pictures we were heading down town. Once we've arrived , we regretted what we'd done before: eating one portion of Beef noodles each. There was a lot of foods/snacks there, but we were not hungry anymore!!! There was no space for more food, because the space was filled with Beef, noodles and dumplings :(

But we didn't want to be beaten by a full stomach, so we kept eating :P. Second station: Toilet bar (don't remember the official name). Everything in the bar was made with one topic: Toilets! Let me list up some names of the menu:
*
* 内臟出血便 Blooding intestine feces
* 拉稀便 Diarrhea
* 嬰仔坐青屎 Baby sitting on green poo
Don't they sound delicious?!?!?!

After having this delicious meal (it was only ice cream and shaved ice), we continued our expedtion to Taiwanese food :P. The next food we put in our stomach (with the accent on "put"):
* 米血 Mixie ((pronounced: mi hsjè) something made from sticky rice)
* 咸酥雞 Salty fried chicken
* 雞腎 Chicken kidney
* 臭豆腐 Stinky Tofu

Yeah, I know we are awesome. Full stomach and then that much food :P After this meal we were X(.

Zivan brought us to somewhere for Taizhong's night view. I don't know how long that trip took, because I felt in sleep after all those foods :P We took some pictures and went back for .......... FOOD!!! Whahahahaha

4th meal in Taizhong:
* 蚵仔煎 ô-á-chian (Oyster with egg and something sticky :P)
* 大腸米腺 Mixian (pronounced: mi hsjèn) with colon
* 湯包 Soup dumpling

That was the end of day one :P
